ai weiwei cedar (i) (2023)
cedar (i) (2023) is a cast aluminium sculpture by ai weiwei that recreates the texture, scars, cracks and surface imperfections of a piece of cedar wood in metal. produced in a limited edition of 50, the work takes something organic and familiar and transforms it into a permanent sculptural object, creating a striking contrast between the natural form and the industrial material.
what i like about cedar (i) is the tension it creates. at first glance it feels organic and natural, but the cast aluminium completely changes the way you experience it in person. the detailed surface preserves the character of the original wood while the weight and permanence of the metal give the work an entirely different presence.
for me, it’s a piece that rewards closer attention. the finish and detail are incredibly precise, but it still retains the rawness and irregularity of the original form rather than feeling overly manufactured or polished. every scar, crack and change in texture becomes part of the sculpture.
that contrast between something fragile-looking and something permanent runs through much of ai weiwei’s work. cedar (i) is particularly effective because the idea is communicated through the physical object itself rather than requiring a lengthy explanation. the material does much of the talking.
it’s also a good example of why ai weiwei’s work has such broad appeal with collectors. visually strong and conceptually clear, cedar (i) connects traditional natural material with contemporary sculpture and industrial production, while remaining an object that works particularly well when experienced in person.
ai weiwei is one of the most internationally recognised contemporary artists of his generation. his practice spans sculpture, installation, photography and architecture, often exploring culture, history, politics, human rights and the relationship between tradition and modernity. his sculptures and editions are held in major institutional and private collections worldwide.
cedar (i) is presented in excellent condition in an elegant glass display dome and is accompanied by its original linen-covered box and a certificate of authenticity hand signed by ai weiwei.
