antony gormley handstones (2019)
handstones (2019) is a set of five small bronze sculptures by antony gormley, each cast from the artist’s own hand. produced in an edition of 100, the works transform the familiar shape of the human hand into something that can be read simultaneously as body, stone, landscape or fragment.
what i particularly like about handstones is their ambiguity. at first they appear to be small weathered stones, but closer inspection reveals the unmistakable forms of gormley’s hands. that tension between the recognisable human body and something that appears entirely natural is what gives the work its quiet sense of mystery.
as with much of gormley’s work, there is no single interpretation. the five bronzes invite you to slow down and look more carefully, considering the relationship between the body, physical space and the natural world. although modest in scale, they carry ideas that are also present in gormley’s much larger sculptures and installations.
for me, there is something particularly appealing about the intimacy of handstones. these are objects that can be viewed from every angle and, when removed from their display case, experienced through touch as well as sight. the bronze surface and subtle variations between the five casts make each one feel individual while keeping the group connected as a single work.
beautifully produced and highly tactile, handstones is a sculpture that rewards repeated engagement rather than relying on immediate spectacle. the relatively small scale also makes the work surprisingly versatile, while the five individual bronzes give it a strong presence as a complete set.
antony gormley is one of britain’s most internationally recognised contemporary sculptors, known for exploring the relationship between the human body, space and the environment. his sculptures and installations are held in major museum and public collections around the world, and his work has become an important part of the development of contemporary sculpture.
