banksy walled off hotel box set (2017)
the walled off hotel box set (2017) is a banksy collectible combining a digital print with a concrete multiple, produced in connection with the artist’s walled off hotel project in bethlehem. opened in 2017 overlooking the separation wall, the hotel brought together banksy’s street art, installation, architecture and political commentary in one of the most distinctive projects of his career.
what i find particularly interesting about the box set is that it functions as both an artwork and a historical document. rather than simply reproducing one of banksy’s better-known images, it connects directly to a specific moment in the artist’s career when his artwork and the physical environment around it became inseparable.
the combination of digital print and cast concrete is particularly effective. the concrete element has an obvious material connection to the architecture and environment surrounding the walled off hotel, giving the piece a physical quality that sets it apart from more conventional banksy print editions.
for me, that connection to the original project is a big part of the appeal. the walled off hotel became one of banksy’s most ambitious installations, bringing together the artist’s familiar humour and visual language with a much more substantial engagement with the history and politics of the location. the box set offers a much smaller-scale way of owning something directly connected to that project.
the unsigned and unnumbered format also reflects the fact that this is a collectible associated with the wider walled off hotel project rather than a conventional numbered banksy print edition. its significance comes from its connection to one of the most recognisable projects in banksy’s career.
banksy remains one of the most internationally recognised contemporary artists, with a distinctive practice combining street art, popular culture, humour and social commentary. projects such as the walled off hotel have extended his work beyond the traditional gallery and print market, creating objects and installations that are closely connected to particular places and moments.
this example is presented in excellent condition in its original frame, which has been over-framed by darbyshire’s, london, in a bespoke perspex box frame. the resulting presentation gives the work a particularly strong, museum-style presence.
