bast trash gun (2014)
trash gun i (2014) is a unique hand-constructed sculpture by bast, transforming discarded materials and found objects into a colourful, highly detailed representation of a firearm. at first glance the silhouette is immediately recognisable, but the closer you look, the more the individual fragments reveal themselves to be something entirely different.
bast was fascinated by the visual possibilities of the discarded and overlooked. born in coney island and closely associated with the new york street-art scene, he incorporated found objects, waste materials, packaging and advertising into his work, often combining them with spray paint, collage and stencils.
that approach is particularly effective in trash gun i. the gun becomes a kind of three-dimensional collage, constructed from fragments of everyday life. packaging, plastic, printed material, wire and other found elements are brought together to create something that is at once familiar and completely unexpected.
there is also a wonderful contradiction at the heart of the work. the gun is an instantly recognisable symbol of power and destruction, yet bast has created the sculpture from materials that would ordinarily be discarded. rather than making the object feel threatening, the bright colours, chaotic construction and fragments of consumer packaging give it an almost playful quality.
this use of discarded material is central to bast’s wider practice. his work frequently questioned the visual language of consumer culture, taking the imagery and materials of everyday life and rearranging them into something more ambiguous, humorous and often satirical. his distinctive collage-based approach also helped establish his reputation within the new york street-art scene, alongside collaborations with artists including faile.
for me, what makes trash gun i particularly interesting is that it sits somewhere between street art, sculpture and assemblage. it retains the immediacy and irreverence of bast’s street practice, but the transformation of found materials into a unique sculptural object gives it a very different presence from his editions and works on paper.
this is a unique work rather than a limited edition. each trash gun was individually constructed from different found materials, meaning that no two examples are the same. the differences in colour, texture and construction make each sculpture an individual artwork in its own right.
trash gun i is presented in a bespoke john jones, london clear acrylic box frame, allowing the construction and detail of the sculpture to be viewed from multiple angles.
