damien hirst suiko h10-4 (2022)
suiko, h10-4 (2022) is a limited edition work by damien hirst from the empresses, a series of five works in which hirst returns to one of the motifs most closely associated with his practice: the butterfly. named after empress suiko, the first reigning empress of japan, suiko brings together paired butterfly wings in a highly symmetrical, kaleidoscopic composition.
set against an intense red ground, the butterfly wings radiate from the centre of the image, while glittering lines across the surface create a strong sense of movement. the combination of vivid colour, repetition and glitter gives the work an immediate visual impact, while the symmetrical composition creates a sense of order beneath the apparent abundance of the imagery.
what i’ve always liked about hirst’s butterfly works is the tension between beauty and something much darker underneath. butterflies naturally suggest beauty, transformation and new life, but they are also inherently transient. that idea of the fleeting nature of life has been central to hirst’s work throughout his career, and the empresses gives those familiar themes a particularly bold and graphic treatment.
for me, suiko is one of the strongest works in the series. at 100 × 100 cm, it has considerable presence, but it’s the way the glitter catches the light that really brings it to life. as you move around the work, the surface changes and the butterflies appear to shift, giving the image an almost animated quality.
it’s a piece that feels unmistakably hirst, but also has the visual impact and immediacy that make his butterfly editions so appealing. the combination of the large square format, intense red background and reflective glitter makes suikoparticularly effective when seen in person.
suiko, h10-4 is an editioned work that brings together several of the themes that have become central to damien hirst’s practice: beauty, mortality, repetition, colour and the passage of time. as part of the empresses, it offers a particularly vivid interpretation of one of hirst’s most recognisable visual motifs.collection: luck 01
