david shrigley witness my joy (2022)
witness my joy (2022) is a limited edition screenprint by david shrigley featuring a characteristically awkward horse alongside the oversized declaration “witness my joy”. printed in 16 colours with a varnish overlay, the work captures a lighter and more celebratory side of shrigley’s distinctive animal-and-text drawings.
this print feels different from many of shrigley’s more sarcastic works. there’s still humour, but it’s lighter and more celebratory. the horse appears almost triumphant, while the oversized declaration somehow manages to be both sincere and faintly ridiculous.
what i like is that shrigley allows the optimism to exist without undermining it. the awkward drawing keeps everything grounded, but the message itself remains unexpectedly genuine. rather than setting up a joke and then taking it away, shrigley lets the positive sentiment stand on its own.
for me, witness my joy is a reminder that shrigley’s work isn’t only about irony. there is a genuine warmth running through some of his animal drawings, and here the combination of the horse and the bold statement creates something that feels quietly uplifting.
the simplicity is also part of the appeal. there are very few elements in the composition, but the expressive drawing and oversized text give the work an immediate presence. it’s the kind of shrigley print that communicates its idea almost instantly, while the slightly awkward relationship between image and words gives it enough personality to keep you looking.
david shrigley has developed one of the most distinctive visual languages in contemporary british art, combining loose drawing, deadpan humour and observations of everyday life. his work has attracted an international audience across contemporary art, design and popular culture, while his limited edition prints form an important part of his wider practice.
witness my joy is an edition of 125 and is presented in mint condition, unframed and retained in its original sealed packaging as issued by the publisher. the print has never been framed or displayed.
