invader invasion kit #18 (2018)
invasion kit #18 (la 2018) is a limited edition ceramic mosaic by invader, composed of 108 individual ceramic tiles and recreating one of the artist’s instantly recognisable pixelated space invader figures. produced in an edition of 300 in 2018, the work brings the physical qualities of invader’s street mosaics into a collectible artwork designed for the home.
what makes the invasion kits particularly interesting is the way they connect invader’s gallery and collecting practice directly to his street art. since the late 1990s, invader has installed ceramic mosaics on buildings and public spaces around the world, transforming the familiar pixelated character from the 1978 video game into his own distinctive artistic language. the invasion kits allow collectors to engage with that idea through an actual ceramic mosaic rather than a conventional print.
invasion kit #18 was produced in 2018 on the occasion of invader’s into the white cube exhibition at over the influence in los angeles. it belongs to the original invasion kit series, which ran from kit #1 through to kit #18, making this the final numbered kit in the series.
for me, this is what makes the invasion kits so interesting to collect. they are unmistakably invader, but they also have a genuine physical connection to the artist’s wider practice. rather than simply reproducing an image of one of his mosaics, the ceramic tiles retain the texture, depth and three-dimensional quality that define the installations found on walls around the world.
there is also something particularly appealing about the scale. invasion kit #18 is compact enough to work comfortably within a collection, but the combination of the bold red, white and black composition and the individual ceramic tiles gives it considerably more presence than a conventional two-dimensional print.
the work was issued with its original packaging and user guide, signed, dated and numbered by invader. this example is presented in excellent condition and has been professionally framed by darbyshire, london.
invader has developed one of the most recognisable visual languages in contemporary street art, combining the pixelated imagery of early video games with the physical language of ceramic mosaic. his installations, prints, sculptures and multiples have created a distinctive bridge between street culture, popular culture and contemporary art.
invasion kit #18 offers a particularly concise expression of that practice: an editioned ceramic mosaic that brings the material language of invader’s street installations into a collectible format.
