marcus harvey ball (2018)
ball (2018) is a glazed stoneware sculpture by marcus harvey that transforms a familiar football into a highly crafted contemporary artwork. produced in an edition of just 22, the piece takes an everyday object associated with movement, energy and popular culture and turns it into something permanent, tactile and quietly sculptural.
what i particularly like about ball is the tension between subject and material. football is normally associated with movement and everyday use, yet here the familiar form becomes something precious and considered. the ceramic construction gives the object a completely different presence, while the glazing adds depth and subtle variation across the surface.
for me, that contrast is what makes the sculpture work. it remains instantly recognisable as a football, but the change in material encourages you to look at the object differently. something that would normally be handled, kicked and eventually discarded becomes an object to examine and preserve.
harvey has often explored ideas around identity, culture, history and collective memory, and ball reflects an interest in the significance we attach to familiar objects. there is a simplicity to the idea, but the combination of form, material and surface gives the sculpture considerably more presence than its subject might initially suggest.
the small edition of just 22 also makes ball a relatively scarce example of harvey’s editioned sculpture. for me, it has the kind of understated quality that works particularly well in a collection — immediately accessible because of its familiar form, but interesting enough to reward closer inspection.
marcus harvey is a british contemporary artist whose work has explored history, popular culture, identity and national symbolism across painting, sculpture and other media. his editioned works offer a different way of engaging with the themes and visual language that run through his wider practice.
